Are We Apostates?

Another great article. Thank you. I am reminded of a passage from Isaiah… “The senseless one himself will speak mere senselessness, and his very heart will work at what is hurtful, to work at apostasy and to speak against Jehovah what is wayward, to cause the soul of the hungry one to go empty, and he causes even the thirsty one to go without drink itself.” (Isaiah 32:6, NW)

Beroean Pickets

When Apollos and I first discussed the creation of this site, we laid down some ground rules. The purpose of the site was to serve as a virtual gathering place for like-minded Jehovah’s Witnesses interested in deeper Bible study than was being provided at the congregation meetings. We were not concerned at the possibility that this might lead us to conclusions that contradicted established organizational doctrine because we both love truth and truth must prevail. (Romans 3:4)

To that end, we decided to constrain our research to the Bible itself, only going to other web sites if they offered research material, such as alternate Bible translations or denomination-neutral Bible commentaries and historical research. Our feeling was that if we could not find the truth from God’s Word, we were not going to find it from the mouths and pens of other men like ourselves. This should not be…

WT Study: Honor the Aged Among You

Beroean Pickets

[Watchtower study for the week of May 12, 2014 – w14 3/15 p. 20]

The thrust of this article concerns identifying who should care for the elderly among us, and how the care should be administered.

Under the subtitle “The Family’s Responsibility”, we start by quoting one of the ten commandments: “Honor your father and your mother.” (Ex. 20:12; Eph. 6:2) We then show how Jesus condemned the Pharisees and scribes for failing to observe this law due to their tradition. (Mark 7:5, 10-13)

Using 1 Timothy 5:4,8,16, paragraph 7 shows that it is not the congregation but the children who have the responsibility for caring for aging or ill parents.

To this point all is well and good. The scriptures show—and we fully acknowledge—that Jesus condemned the Pharisees for dishonoring their parents by putting a tradition (a law of man) above the law…

Earth Made Fit to Live On

“One generation passes away, and another generation comes: but the earth abides forever.” Not the words of a fallible geologist, but of Ecclesiastes, chapter one, verse four, written under inspiration of the Creator; “God himself that formed the earth and make it, he has established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited.” (Isaiah 45:18). Further by the mouth of his prophet Isaiah (66:1) the Creator says: “The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool.” “And I will make the place of my feet glorious.” (60:13)

Question from Readers, August 15, 2014 Watchtower

Beroean Pickets

I got an advance notification of some “new light”.i It won’t be new to most of you. We actually revealed this “new light” almost two years ago. (This is no credit to me either, as I was hardly the first to come to this understanding.) Before giving you the lowdown on this “new light”, I wanted to share with you something one of my fellow elders challenged me with a while back. While trying to make a point of Scripture, he asked: “Do you think you know more than the Governing Body?”

This is a common challenge; one intended to silence the dissenter, for if he answers “No”, the response would be, “Then why are you challenging their teaching.” On the other hand, if he answers “Yes”, he leaves himself open to charges of presumptuousness and a proud spirit.

Of course, we would never rephrase this question to ask:…
